14. New Love

With the multi-colored Chicago skyline in the background and Lake Michigan surrounding us, Cousin and I were in the most romantic spot on Earth. Still in the formalwear we’d worn to the dinner, cuddling, hand-in-hand, we strolled along the isthmus jutting from the Chicago shoreline, bordering the Adler Planetarium and the John G. Shedd Aquarium.

“Dewayne, thanks again.”

He laughed. “You don’t have to keep thanking me.”

“Oh yes, I do. Almost all my major clients were there. I was that far from becoming a bag lady. I’m so lucky they thought that was all part of my show. I’m definitely joining ITC, International Training in Communication, Toastmasters, or something first thing tomorrow. I had all these people coming up asking me to speak afterwards. I can’t keep telling them I’m busy forever.”

“You know the person you should thank is that woman . . . Sabrina—God, what an actress. Beauty. Brains. Personality. She could go far. I wonder if she’s interested in moving to LA. Do you know how I can contact—”

Rose gave me a look that would have turned the Medusa into stone.

“Oh, that’s who she is. And her date?—”

“She probably felt guilty.”

“Still, she didn’t have to do it. When you got that deer-in-the headlights look—”

“I did not look like a deer-in-the headlights.”

“Yes you did, but a cute one.”

Rose grinned and gave me a look that said, “Thank you.” . . . and much more.

“Just because she has your ex doesn’t make her your enemy.”

“It does—”

“Had you met her before?”

“No.”

“Were you and your ex dating when the two of them started?”

“He told me they weren’t.”

“You believe him?”

“Yes.—But they started talking before we broke up.”

“All right. If your places were reversed and you were Sabrina would you take Adel from you?”

“No, I wouldn’t.”

“Then you don’t really want him, so the argument’s moot. You should thank her for removing your surplus man and recycling him.”

I laughed. “OK. I would.”

“Then, if you would do that to her, why is it so bad that she did it to you?”

“I don’t know. It is. This is not logic. It’s love.”

Cousin laughed and I joined him.

“After all these years, I still can’t out debate you.”

“Well, I thank her.”

“Why?”

“What’s her name?”

“Sabrina.”

“Duh. I know that.”

I laughed again. “Sabrina James. Why?”

“I’m putting her on retainer. Her job is to steal any man you’re with who’s not me.”

We laughed and came together with a kiss.

Then dramatically he faced Chicago from the planetarium. Puzzled, I watched him. He took a moment, then yelled at the top of his lungs. “Thank you Sabrina James!—“

I whispered. “Shsss. Stop that!” But teasing he got louder.

“For giving me my best friend back!”

Again we laughed.

“Ahhhhhhh. That’s so sweet.”

I placed my hand around her waist and pulled her to me.

We looked deeply into each other’s eyes and our humor faded as the moment took us back, back to four years of unspoken love we’d shared in high school.

“God, Rose. I have really missed you.”

“Me too.”
